Victoria Vital Signs Now Available for Download
The Victoria Foundation has published it's annual "Vital Signs: Greater Victoria's 2009 Annual Checkup" which is now available for dowload on their website. The Vital Signs report measures the health of our city and assigns grades in a number of areas, including learning, health & wellness, transportation, and economy. 2009's report shows that we are doing well in areas such as recycling and enjoyment of natural environment and that internet literacy is on the increase in our region, but that we are still challenged by issues such as rental availability, child care spaces, affordability and illicit drug use.

Q & A with Municipal Candidates
As the 2008 municipal election approaches, we need to know that we have a council who will stand up for Downtown. This summer, DV2020 sent out an email to all those who joined the "Friends of Downtown" mailing list (almost 400 citizens) proposing a series of questions that we think are critical to ensuring that Downtown remains vibrant and healthy in the comming years. After response from the Friends, and consulation with other stakeholders, we've posted these core questions here. We are asking candidates to give us their answers to these questions, and we are asking all those who care about our Downtown to help us to determine where each candidate stands.

It is not sufficient to simply gather ideas from stakeholders, and then shelve those ideas. The most important part of a vision is seeing it through into action! DV2020 is committed to long-term monitoring of the benchmarks of progress on various fronts; celebrating successes and identifying challenges. To this end, the DV2020 Board periodically surveys the changes that are occuring downtown. In May 2008, we released our 3rd Annual Report for review by all the Friends of Downtown Victoria. To join the Friends of Downtown Victoria, email info @ DV2020.ca .

Downtown Victoria 2020 was a conference series and public ideas gathering excercise founded in 2003 by concerned citizens who care about the health and vitality of Victoria's Downtown. The proceedings of the conferences, the ideas that were submitted by Victoria residents, and the action plans that emerged from the process fell on fertile ground, and the last few years in Victoria have been exciting ones with many of the things we envisioned becoming realities.

With the upcoming 2008 election, and a new Downtown Plan in the works, it seems a good time to look back, and to take stock of what we hoped for, what has happened, and what still needs to be done. This website begins by archiving the materials generated during the DV2020 process, including the conference series, annual reports, and action plans. The next step is to determine how far we have come in achieving our objectives. Stay tuned!
